Au pair Inka in Germany
Dear Host Family,
My name is Inka and I will turn 18 in May. I live in a small town near Münster with my parents and my sister. We have a close family dynamic, often spending evenings playing games or watching movies together. One thing we all share is a love for traveling.
My family has a holiday home in Portugal, where we spend most of our summers. In Portugal, we have many German-speaking friends with whom we enjoy traveling the world. With this little travel group, we visited Costa Rica this year and Tanzania last year. Over the years, we’ve also explored Egypt, Spain, Austria, Switzerland, Belgium, and the Netherlands, each time enjoying the unique cultures and stunning landscapes.
I’ve had the chance to visit Sweden before, specifically Gothenburg, but only for a basketball tournament in 2019. Even during that short stay, I found Sweden incredibly beautiful and fascinating. My interest in Swedish culture might also come from the many Astrid Lindgren movies I loved as a child.
Basketball is one of my biggest passions, but I also love spending time with my friends in my free time. I enjoy being creative—drawing and crafting are some of my favorite hobbies. I also like photography and use my digital camera to capture beautiful moments and document experiences. Nature holds a special place in my heart, especially in winter, when I can go snowboarding. I also love spending time with animals. When I was younger, I did horseback riding, which I really enjoyed.
Another hobby of mine is watching Formula 1 races with my father on Sundays, which is something we look forward to every week. As a family, we also love watching movies together, particularly Marvel and Star Wars films.
In addition to playing basketball, I coach a girls’ basketball team for ages 11 to 14. I teach them exercises to improve their skills and motivate them during games. If I don’t have a game on the weekends, I often babysit my neighbor’s 6-year-old daughter, Svea. We spend our time playing imaginative games like princess or witch, walking to the nearby forest or ice cream shop, and baking treats—especially during Christmastime.
In June 2025, I will graduate from Gymnasium Martinum, where I’m completing my Abitur with advanced courses in geography and English. During my time in school, I also completed an internship at a kindergarten, which I absolutely loved. I enjoyed crafting with the children, playing outside, and sharing joyful moments with them. This experience showed me how much I enjoy working with kids, which is why I decided to become an au pair.
I believe being an au pair is a wonderful opportunity to experience a new country, meet new people, and spend even more time with children. I chose Sweden because, as I mentioned, I admire the culture and want to learn more about it. I’m also drawn to Sweden’s beautiful nature—its snowy winters and summers full of blooming flowers.
After my time as an au pair, I am considering a career as a kindergarten teacher or pursuing other work with children. Currently, I work as a server in a small café, gaining experience in responsibility and communication.
I am really looking forward to meeting you and becoming a part of your family.
Best wishes,
Inka
